If you’re reading this post then you are probably on one or more social media sites.  But setting up a profile on one or more of the sites is just step one in getting you or your business noticed.  Social media is not a spectator sport.  You have to be actively involved to see any use in it.  Here are a few things that you can do to get noticed:

1. Update your status daily.  Whatever site or sites you use, you have to keep talking and be consistant about it.

2. Comment.  It’s not enough to just browse through and read the updates that others have made.  You have to leave a comment or at least click ‘like’.

3. Upload a photo.  Almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it.  Don’t be afraid to take a picture or two and upload them to whatever site or sites.  People love interesting pics.

4. Blog and comment.  This is simple, be active on your blog and comment on the blogs of others.

5. Share interesting or useful articles that you find.  Hootsuite makes this one a breeze.

6. Don’t miss a birthday.  This is something that I do every day without fail.  I look at the birthday list on Facebook and Plaxo and wish happy birthdays.

7. Upload a video.  Being your own movie maker is so simple now that there’s no excuse for using video in your social media efforts.

8. Re-Tweet on Twitter.  Find something interesting on Twitter?  Retweet it.  You’re creating content for yourself and helping spread the word about the person that tweeted it in the first place.

9. Update your Facebook Fan page daily.  You shouldn’t over do this one.  Just don’t ignore it and make sure to engage in the conversation if someone comments on your page.

10. Share where you go.  Tools like Yelp and Foursquare allow you to easily share your favorite places and thoughts about them.

These are just a few ways to get noticed.  There are more and new things keep coming all of the time.  The point is that you need to engage in order to get noticed.

What are some ways that you engage your online community?

    Brodie,

Great post. My favorite line is social media is not a spectator sport.

I started using social media after taking your twit or tweet class I now get 2-4 jobs a month as a result of my efforts.

I don’t follow all the rules you mentioned above but I started tracking my traffic and I have discovered that the confrontational posts typically get the most comments, the positive posts generate the most traffic.

People must like reading about things that make them feel good.

With that in mind I have a challenge for you.

Try and write a positive post at least once a month, a post that raises someone else up. I did this 3 days ago and My traffic over the last 3 days is 3 times what is normal for my blog.

Will do Scott, I must admit that I don’t read other’s blogs enough. This is an area that I need to work harder in. I read your post by the way, It is very nice to find builders that care more about the quality of their product and less about fast turn around.
